Mod Green Pod

Us

Nancy Mims is Co-founder and Creative Director of Mod Green Pod. Prior to Mod Green Pod, Nancy was a highly successful textile print designer for nearly a decade. Represented by agents in New York City and Los Angeles, she has sold over 1,400 of her original designs to retailers, manufacturers, and converters around the world. Frequently cited in the design press for her unique approach to textiles and her own personal style, Nancy enjoys combining her keen sense of color with her belief that a healthy home need not be a boring one. At Mod Green Pod, Nancy creates new print collections, designs custom collections, oversees marketing efforts and drives the vision of the web site. She lives in Austin with her husband and two sprouts. When not doodling for the next collection or dreaming up the company’s next big project, Nancy can usually be found tending to her garden, shopping at a local farmer’s market for tomorrow night’s tasty supper, or having an impromptu dance party in the living room with her kids.

Valerie Pearcy is General Manager of Mod Green Pod. She joined the company in July 2008 after paying her dues in corporate America in a variety of leadership roles. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, she grew up steeped in the home furnishings industry and focused her higher education on journalism and design history. Mod Green Pod allows Valerie the chance to merge her business expertise with her passion for good design and the health of the environment. Valerie’s daily work at Mod Green Pod centers on production management, daily business operations, and customer experience. She lives in Austin with her high school sweetheart husband and their dog, April, who serves as Mod Green Pod’s official mascot. Look for April modeling our fabrics on the web site!

Lisa Mims co-founded Mod Green Pod during the summer of 2005 with her sister-in-law Nancy after they had both struggled to find home textiles that matched their taste for high design with their desire for a healthier home –and planet — for their children. A graduate of Dartmouth’s MBA program and an alumna of Chase Manhattan’s and Kate Spade’s finance departments, Lisa played a key role in building the business foundation from which Mod Green Pod continues to bloom. Prior to Mod Green Pod, she also worked as a brand manager for Gillette and served as a consultant to several fashion start-ups in Boston and New York. She continues to serve as a consultant to Mod Green Pod from New England, where she lives with her family.

Our City

Austin, Texas, is not just the capital of Texas, but also the capital of Mod Green Pod. Often hailed as the live music capital of the world and with an unofficial calling to “Keep Austin Weird,” Austin is a creative mecca bustling with cultural diversity and overflowing with inspiration for Mod Green Pod’s whimsical look and green focus. Nancy and Valerie met in Austin in a graduate school seminar at the University of Texas many years ago, and officially moved Mod Green Pod’s business headquarters to our fair city in October 2008. They can often be found having lunch meetings at Wheatsville Co-op, while admiring each other’s shoes in size 9.5 narrow.

Our Products

Please see individual item pages for specific details on repeats.

Our wallpapers measure 27 inches wide after trimming. Please see individual item pages for specific details on repeats.

Mod Green Pod is a proud member of the Organic Trade Association (OTA). We follow the fiber standards set forth by the OTA and are working hard to support the slowly-but-surely-organizing Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). That said, the biggest threat to authentically organic fabrics comes from conventional textile companies who overstate their environmental practices. This practice is often called “green washing,” and we encourage customers to ask questions about the products they are purchasing. Mod Green Pod will continue to push for improvements in its own practices and that of its production partners, and we will keep our site (and blog) updated with these progresses.

Our fabrics are printed on 100% certified organic cotton grown in the United States. We are proud to be helping revitalize (and make more green) the domestic textile industry by also weaving and printing our product line completely in the United States. Doing so also helps minimize our company’s carbon footprint by reducing energy expenditures on shipping. Our non-toxic, low-impact printing pigments and dyes give our fabrics rich, saturated color while remaining in compliance with strict GOTS standards. In accordance with GOTS, we do not use fabric protectors, color fast agents, stain resistants, wrinkle-free agents or fire retardants on our products. This way we know there are no dangerous chemicals such as formaldehyde (wrinkle-free agents), PBDEs (flame retardents), or PFOA (i.e. Teflon/Scotchgard) off-gassing into your home.

Our vinyl-free wallpapers are back to the basics as well. We use water-based inks on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper and finished the product with a water-based glaze that can tolerate light wiping.

Most conventional wallpaper is made from or is coated with vinyl, also known as polyvinyl chloride or PVC. This material ranks among the most environmentally damaging plastics. The production process of PVC releases highly toxic materials called dioxins into the air, and then again upon eventual incineration. At very low levels, dioxins have been linked to immune system suppression, reproductive disorders, a variety of cancers, and endometriosis. Why bring this into your home if you don’t have to?
